Background
The RAADS-R (Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale – Revised) is one of the most widely used adult autism screening assessments designed to identify autism-related personality traits, sensory experiences, communication styles, and neurodevelopmental characteristics in adults.
The assessment was developed by Ritvo, Ritvo, Guthrie, and colleagues to assist in identifying autism spectrum characteristics in adults who may not have been recognized or diagnosed earlier in life.
The questionnaire explores experiences across both childhood and adulthood, focusing on social interaction, communication style, sensory sensitivity, routines, emotional understanding, cognitive style, focused interests, and social adaptation behaviors.
Many autistic traits can appear in subtle or highly adaptive ways, especially in individuals who consciously learn social behaviors, mask social difficulties, or develop coping strategies over time.
Research studies have demonstrated strong reliability and usefulness for the RAADS-R across autism research, neurodevelopmental assessment, adult autism screening, clinical psychology, psychiatry, and autism-focused research environments.
Procedure
You will be presented with a series of statements describing thoughts, behaviors, communication styles, sensory experiences, routines, and social interactions that people may experience in everyday life.
For each statement, choose the response option that best reflects your experience across your lifetime.
Some questions focus on your current experiences, while others compare your current experiences with how you felt or behaved before the age of 16.
The assessment focuses on autism-related personality traits, neurodevelopmental patterns, sensory experiences, social adaptation strategies, and structured thinking styles.
Participation
This assessment is designed for adults and older adolescents interested in understanding autism-related personality traits, sensory experiences, communication patterns, social behavior, routines, and cognitive style.
The questionnaire is intended for educational, personality, screening, and research purposes only.
Results should not be considered a clinical diagnosis or substitute for professional autism-focused psychological, psychiatric, or neurodevelopmental evaluation.
Scoring & Interpretation
Responses are scored according to the persistence and timing of autism-related experiences across childhood and adulthood.
Higher scores generally indicate stronger autism-related personality traits involving social communication differences, sensory sensitivity, structured thinking patterns, routine-focused behavior, detail-oriented cognition, and social adaptation strategies.
Some items are reverse scored to improve measurement balance and reduce response bias.
Dimensional scores are also calculated to evaluate specific autism-related personality and neurodevelopmental domains independently.
